All the ladies are eagerly awaiting for the movie Magic Mike, (Steven Soderbergh, 2012) starring Mathew McConaughey, Channing Tatum and Joe Manganiello (popular for his role as werewolf Alcide Herveaux on the HBO television series True Blood). All I know so far about the movie is that it is about male stripping, YAY!…and the stars of the movie are beautifully manscaped, double YAY!
Magic Mike will reinforce to men the notion that ladies do admire and are attracted to men who are well-groomed or “manscaped”. Of course the sculptured tanned physique helps, but manscaping helps to show it off. A blanket of hair on the chest and abs covers that awesomeness up. Manscaping does not imply you need to take ALL of your hair off, a simple trim will do just fine!
Unfortunately, Mathew McConaughey recently reported on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that his manscaping for the movie Magic Mike did not go very well. He encouraged guys to not do hair removal if they didn’t have to. Sadly, I think his story fostered the stereotypical views of male waxing or manscaping. McConaughey said he went to a mall in Hollywood where a Russian technician, who was not personable, would be doing his manscaping. I personally have my doubts on how many “Olga’s” are still removing hair for folks. It is the stereotype we have seen on TV for years. The go-to reference for many men is in the film The 40 Year Old Virgin, (Judd Apatow, 2005), where Steve Carell’s character has his chest hair removed…very painfully! After seeing this scene, it is no wonder why men are scared to death about waxing or manscaping. I am hoping that more men will begin discussing their manscaping and the fact that it does not have to hurt so bad. How to find a waxing professional
McConaughey is a wonderful story teller and very comical as well. I admit that I did laugh about how his technician would say “So Sorry!” after every pull of hair. Although I believe he could have had a much better experience, I, along with all of the women planning their Magic Mike, girl’s-night-out, appreciate his dedication to the film!
